Funding Integrity

Supplier Accountability for Communication Devices

Speech generating devices are often funded through Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance programs because communication is recognized as essential to health, safety, and independence.

These programs typically reimburse suppliers with the expectation that patients will receive a complete, fully supported communication solution that includes evaluation, delivery, customization, training, maintenance, and ongoing support of the device.

The lawsuit raises concerns about whether certain practices align with those expectations. According to the complaint, AbleNet allegedly enables the use of Tobii Dynavox software on its devices through workaround methods involving patient-directed downloads and gift card-funded software purchases.

Tobii Dynavox believes healthcare funding systems function best when suppliers are accountable for the complete solutions they provide and when patients, clinicians, and payors clearly understand who is responsible for support and service over time. Healthcare systems depend on trust, a proper clinical assessment, documentation, integrity, and long-term patient support.
